Training
Dear PingSkills,
I realise my serve is usually more a liability than asset as it lacks spin and sometimes is too high. Usually, I only practice rallies during practice sessions and we play matches where we have a chance to serve. Do you have any tips on how I can continue to develop my serve to something useful for the game?
Regards,
Kenneth
Hi Kenneth,
Practising your serve is key. I would start to introduce a serve into most drills that you do. You can start any drill that you do during your practice session with a serve, return of serve and an opening topspin.
This is a key area of training that links to your matches.
If you get pushed back from the table don't just give up the point. Try and and get back into the rally. By lobbing the ball high and deep you give yourself time to get into position. If you can then get some topspin on the ball to force the smasher further away from the table then you are likely to get a weaker smash and then you can take your chance and try to counter attack!
