Strokes

I'm having problems with this player in my school. He serves and plays most of the balls really low and is really consistent. I can usually push back his short balls back short, but I really don't have an answer for his long and middle length balls that are very low to the table. I play my forehand with topspin mostly, but I have a lot of problems imparting top spin on the ball because it's so low. Most of my balls end up in net or I hit a weak shot and he punishes me with his forehand.

Any advice on how should I cope with this?

HI Ziga,

This is an important stroke in Table Tennis and one you should keep working on to master.

You should persevere with trying to topspin or loop this ball.  It may take some time to master.

Look a our lesson on the Forehand Loop Off Backspin. This will show you how to do the stroke.

Work hard at it.  It will be rewarding for you.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
