Ma lin serve and pendulum movement

Serving

hi coach,

i saw that ma lin after doing a pendulum serve, moves his wrist the other way as if he was doing a reverse pendulum, i saw this in asian games 2010 finals though the spin on the ball is of regular pendulum. is it to get better brushing or a fake movement to confuse the opponent, dont think this is a fake movement, i guess at that level fake movement etc does not matter, can you do a video response and talk about ma lin serve overall also if you can talk about his backspin serve also called ghost serve by some...

request you to do a video (if you do one ) with a shakehand grip (though ma lin has a penhold)

 tks,

Manish

Hi Manish,

We are working on showing you the Ma Lin backspin serve at the moment.  It should be up this week.

As for his movement after the contact this is a fake movement that will confuse his opponents even though they are very high level players.  The extra movement is an illusion and just gives his opponent something else to see and think about.

In case you want to have a look at the link (ref.: my comment on his movement after pendulum serve), doesn't look like fake movement at all, though the ball moves as it should during a regular pendulum...Great if you can include some pointers to this in the video that you are working on...

In this video he is using a fake movement after the contact to make it a little harder for Joo Se Hyuk to see the contact and spin on the serve.
