Massive curve

Strokes and Technique

To get massive curve on your ball, is it best to wait till the ball starts coming down off the table?

I was watching some ping pong videos, and it seems like the pros hit the ball as if its coming and then nailing it with a massive front spin curve.

Is this a good thing to do? or is there any advanatages when doing this?

Hi Jonn,

To put a lot of sidespin on the ball you don’t need to hit it late. What you are probably seeing is a slow sidespin shot that will look like it curves a lot but in reality it doesn’t have more spin than a sidespin stroke that is pushed through faster. It looks like it has more spin because it doesn’t have much forward speed so it turns more off the table.

The slower stroke is actually easier to play because they have more time to read the spin and react to it. I think you should try to play the stroke a bit earlier and faster to really have good effect.

When you talk about massive front curve spin I think you are talking about topspin here and you are exactly right. The pros play with a lot of topspin on most of their shots. It is a stroke that you should learn and try to lay a lot in your table tennis. Topspin is king in table tennis shots.

Coach i keep on curving the ball but my opponent keeps on hitting the ball (is it because he's better than me)

It could well be the case.  Sidespin shouldn't be a big focus in the rally.  In the rally you should try to hit with more topspin so that you can generate more speed.
