Dear Coach Alois,

Nice talking to you again after a while, hope PingSkills is going well.

I have 2 questions:

1. My backhand topspin always go down the line, as I do it in a straight line in front of the body and use a lot of wrist, as I think that way I get the most speed& spin. How can I get it to go cross court.

2. How can I unleash my strengths, go for high quality shots in a match situation e.g. high spin & power on both FH & BH topspin, as I feel like I am not playing badly, but I want to play to the best of my ability.

your response would be appreciated.

Thank you, Sky

Hi Sky,

Thanks for your questions! It sounds like you have a good understanding of the fundamentals of backhand topspin, however you are looking for ways to add variation and perform at your very best in competitive situations.

For your first question, just think about hitting the ball little earlier.  This will get the ball to go across rather than down the line.  You can also just change the angle of your wrist slightly to face the cross court area.

For your second question, the key is in practice and repetition. Spend time in each practice session working on increasing the speed, spin, and accuracy of your shots. Pay close attention to form and technique to ensure it is correct at all times. Visualize how you want to perform as you practice and incorporate mental imagery into your routine.
