Mental Preparation
Hi Alois,
I have been under coaching for last 15 months or so. Every time I play with my coach I play well. At least that’s what he says! However whenever I play a Match with anyone else in the Club I make mistakes, lose points which are supposed to be mine , get too excited while smashing the ball which results in losing the point. Basically I feel I am inconsistent during matches and make mistakes in everything which I am good at during my Training. My coach tells me that I don’t have a Match / Tournament Temperament and insists that I need to improve on this.
Quite frustrating is I don’t know HOW? Can you please guide me on what shall I do to get out of this.
Many Thanks
Rohan
Hi Rohan,
This is a common thing. The important thing is that you keep as calm as you can during a match. During a match if you feel yourself start to feel nervous, take a few seconds out to take a deep breath and think about your tactics.
The other thing is getting used to playing players with different styles. When you hit with your coach he is probably hitting the ball well for you. When you play others they may not hit the ball as cleanly.
The fifth building block of table tennis is using match drills to simulate real-game situations. Match drills start with a serve and return, creating a practice environment that closely mirrors actual gameplay.
Within these drills, you can focus on specific skills, such as executing topspin against backspin. Incorporating match drills into your training helps you transition your practice into competitive play, building confidence and readiness for real matches.
To develop this building block the following video on match drill routines will be extremely helpful.
