Strokes and Technique

Hello guys i have gained a great love for Table Tennis but i find that even though after 6 months i have become more of a competitor then just a sparring partner for the others at work. ( out of 10 times i still loose to them. I am also a left handed player so alot of your videos really throw me off.

My question for the most part is at work how can i overcome really awkward spins on the serve? What i mean is ill see the spin but wont know how to counter them quickly enough. I tend to always set them up for the third ball.

Been working on my back hand but notice that once the paddle covers the ball from my point of view from time to time ill loose it.

I also read about how i should focus on the 6 strokes first. But what do i do when i am served with side back spin, or back spin? Thank you for your time.

Hi Wilder,

Sounds like you are improving.  To combat spin the best weapon you will have is experience.  It just takes time once you have orked out the basics.

Take a look at our DVD, Receiving Secrets Revealed.  This will give you a lot of important information.

For the backhand try to get the follow through a little lower so that you can see the ball all the way through the stroke.

It is difficult to learn this game in a hurry especially trying to play games against players that have developed spin.  If you are looking at results straight away then you do need to spend some time on understanding spin straight away.  If you are looking at long term improvement then the basic strokes are the most important building blocks.  Of course there can be a mix of the two.

Thanks guys, i applied some of this stuff at work today and noticed a difference. Now being new to your site, if i have more questions should i start a new topic or continue on this one?

Now here is my issue with the players at work, I dont believe any of them really use tradional basics. More like back yard play. Is there a way to upload a small clip of us at work so you guys get a better understanding. I mean i love to play at work but have my heart set on becoming a more polished player and do not want to pick up those back yard habits. Also today i was working on my backhand flick. For the most part serves with top spin and side spin i was returning regularly. In comes this new guy with a slow back spin and i just could not get it over with the back hand flick. Am i trying to get under it too much? Cause it would hit the net or up and off the table. Since i know that i have spinning opponents i want to try to get on offense as soon as i can and take away their spin. So im trying to get better at reverseing their Back/side spin serve and return with top spin.

I know its alot and trust me im getting your dvds as soon as i can but right now with a pregnant wife, UGH MONEY IS TIGHT!!! Thanks in advance

If there is something on a different topic, just send me another question and we will start up a new area to explore.

For the slow backspin serve, use more angle to flick it or the better option would be to use a short push.  This will keep the ball near the net and difficult for your opponent to attack. Then you will have an opportunity on the next ball to attack.
