Staying at the top

Sir, I've always wondered something about the history of table tennis players. I mean to say there are many players who have reached the top of table tennis players but they can't grip their position for long. Why is it so? We can take examples of players such as Ma Lin, Kong Linghui and many more.

Hi Sandesh,

Table Tennis is very competitive at the top.  The game makes it difficult for one person to dominate because of the different styles of playing.  It is hard to have a game that no one can defeat.  That is one of the really interesting things about the sport.

I think if a player can stay in the top 10 for a few years then that is an awesome feat.

Wouldn't you agree that table tennis is also a game in  which the mind and the body should work in unison. Then if one could co-ordinate properly and gaining control over his movements, can't he stay at the top?

Hi Sandesh,

It certainly is possible. The problem is that every player is doing their best to make it to the top which makes it very difficult to remain number 1 for a long period of time.

Thank you, I am going to keep training and reach the top someday.

Alois, I think an implication of your answer is that when someone reaches the top 10, then the training programs of many top players start to orient toward countering that player's style. Winners are targets.

that's true but we can learn a lot from players below your level too

Douglas, that is right.  There is a lot of video analysis done on the top players.  They definitely become targets.
