I barely learned to chop the ball for a backspin on my serves but my problem is the backspin is too weak to work on anybody. Sometimes i get lucky and the ball does its thing but for the most part, my backspin serves are the weakest of all (backspin sidespin topspin)? It can't be my paddle because It has a decent rubber surface on it-not the best rubber paddle but good enough to generate sidespin or topspin that works.

Hi Esteban,

If you are generating reasonable spin on the other serves, then think about relating that to your backspin serve.  Think about the principles that generate the spin.  Brushing the ball and then brushing it fast  Brush right at the bottom of the ball to generate the pure backspin.

Go away from the table and get the bat to brush the ball really fast.  Don't worry about getting the ball on the table, just see if you can get the ball to stop and come back towards you. Really rip through the contact and see how much spin you can get.

Thanks for the advice. It turns out that I used my wrist during the backspin, but didn't quite hold the paddle loosely like I was supposed to. I fixed this error and my backspin improved loads more. Thanks again!

Hi Brian,

You don't need a High Toss serve.  It can generate more spin but you can also generate a lot of spin with a lower toss.  Just see which one feels more comfortable for you.
