Hey Alois.

Recently I've Managed To Get My Forehand To A Standard I Am Happy With However As A Result From This, My Backhand Suffers.

I Used To Be A Mainly Defensive Backhand Player With No Ability For Forehand Shots, When I Grip The Bat, I Can Seem To Only Perform One Type Of Shot At The Table, I Find If Very Hard To Change But I Don't Know Why?

Is There A Reason For This? Or A Drill I Can Do To Help Me To Become A More All Rounded Player?

Lastly, I'd Love To See You And Jeff Do A Video Where You Both Play A Game But Are Only Allowed To Use The Backhand Sidespin Flick, I've Heard You Are Amazing At It, And The Head Coach Called Aubury (Aubs) At My Table Tennis Club Does Not Believe Me! :)

Please Reply ASAP!

Many Thanks,

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Try a couple of things.  Firstly make sure you have a grip that you can use for both forehand and backhand without changing it.  This should be a fairly central grip.  Take a look at our lesson on Get a Grip.

The second thing is to think about your stance.  Often when players focus on one stroke, they will tend to turn their feet in that direction.  So if they are doing a lot of forehands they will put their left foot more forward.  Then when they try to play backhands, it becomes awkward. So make sure your set up is quite square on so that you can play both forehands and backhands from the same position.

As for playing a game only using the backhand sidespin flick I think would be interesting but there would be a lot of ball picking up.  It is not a shot that I use a lot or do very well.
