Hi Alois,
when I play with my mate it happens to hit the edges or the net and score a point. When this happens in an important moment of the game the psychological impact on the opponent is devastating in our experience. We were wondering yesterday why this doesn't happen as often as it happens to us during hi-ranked matches. We understand that playing balls close to the edges is a risky strategy, indeed we don't aim at the edges or the net on purpose. However we expect a top player to have enough accuracy to place the ball close to the edges regularly and with a fair amount of confidence. Can you tell us why this kind of "extreme" shots are not as frequent as we would expect?
Thanks!
Hi Valerio,
I think it happens quite a lot with the better players too because they do hit close to the edge.
Maybe we feel them more when we are playing ourselves.

It's worth mentioning that the pro's are able to return net and edge balls surprisingly often. I also like to believe that despite how well the pro's aim, they consciously err on the side of safety by a couple of centimeters when it comes to aiming for an outer line.
Those few centimeters and the slight chance of hitting an extreme edge ball don't weight up against the risk of losing the point outright.
