Off-bounce smash

Strokes and Technique

Greetings Team,

following another argument with beforementioned new clubmate,I would like to ask you about your opinion about using the very early smashes in order to increase the frequency of the fired balls and using as much of opponent's speed as possible, compensating my lack of swing power. This timing is isually used by top level shortpips penholders. I am not trying to suddenly change to their style,I just want to develop a way how to deal with high balls without using too much power, rather relying on control and spin. The new clubmate told me that I am foolish and that he does not understand why I dont just slam it. (Answer: because normal smash requires more power than I can deliver to be effective, and it is also very difficult for me to choose the bat angle correctly for flat hits when the ball is stopped)

THanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes you can try to hit the ball off the bounce.  It does become a lot more risky but if it is something that you are comfortable with then give it a try.
