I use currently the above bat.  But, your video shows all using Shake bat.   All your posture technique are applicable to pen holder bat?   Besides, regarding top spin, I am not sure which time and where I put the impact on the ball.  I was understood that mostly I hit the ball at the top of the bouncing.   Is it true for top spin?

And I have tried to hit on one-third of the ball from the top.

 Is it right?

I would be thankful of any your kind information!

Hi Dy,

The technique is surprisingly very similar between shakehand and penhold.  The only real difference comes in the playing of the backhand. Take a look at our lesson on Penhold Techniques for Table Tennis.

Some players think about hitting the topspin on the way down.  This is possible but for an effective strong topspin you can hit the ball at the to of the bounce still. For most of your strokes it is good to hit the ball at then top of the bounce.  This gives you the best chance to make an effective stroke.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
