Playing half volley shots

Strokes

I find it hard to resist attempting half volley shots on top spin/looped shots but my success rate is very low. I like this shot as when it does come off it changes the flow of play quite effectively especially when the opponent is back from the table or if I can change the direction. I find I mostly put them into the net as opposed to off the end of the table which I find somewhat counter intuitive as I expect the top spin to carry the ball. What sort of shot/technique is most effective when half volleying?

Hi Rod,

This is a very advanced stroke.  The keys are to make your half volley simple and a short stroke.  Most people tend to lift the ball off the end of the table so it is interesting that most of yours are going into the net.

Try opening the angle of your bat slightly.  Start by blocking the ball back and then slowly add a little topspin.  You can increase the amount of topspin as you become more comfortable.
