Hi Sasmit,

he thing that usually works against short pimples is to spin the ball heavily either with topspin or backspin.  If you play a flat ball it is easy for them to control the ball with the short pimples.  The heavier spin ball is harder for them to get a clean contact on and will often lead to them making a mistake.  The heavy backspin ball can be more difficult for them to lift as the short pimples will not be able to generate the grip spin to lift the ball.

Hi Alois,

I have the following questions about playing against short pimples.

(1) If I serve or push with heavy backspin, what spin is returned from the push with short pimples ?

(2) If I serve or push with heavy backspin, what spin is returned from the flick with short pimples?

(3) If I topspin the ball, what spin is returned from the block with short pimples?

Regards,

Albert

Hi Albert,

(1) If I serve or push with heavy backspin, what spin is returned from the push with short pimples?

In this situation assuming your opponent pushes the ball, it will come back with a little backspin. As the short pimples can't grip the ball as much as normal rubber, it won't have as much backspin as if it were played with normal rubber. If you like this type of ball coming back with only a little backspin it might be a useful tactic to serve heavy backspin to the short pimples.

(2) If I serve or push with heavy backspin, what spin is returned from the flick with short pimples?

When they flick against a backspin ball it won't have much spin. It will be either flat or have a little topspin.

(3) If I topspin the ball, what spin is returned from the block with short pimples?
The block will tend to come back with a little topspin on it. Sometimes it may be quite flat depending on how they hit the ball.

This all occurs because with short pimples you can generate some spin although no where near as much as using inverted rubber. Take a look at our lesson on the Effects of Rubbers for more details.
