Training and Drills
When rally begins i do rally with only backhand or forehand. I find it difficulty to switch between backhand and forehand. What can i do to improve it?
Hi Yashant,
This is a common problem. The answer is to do some practice drills that involve switching between your backhand and forehand. Find yourself a training partner and ask them to block one ball to your backhand side and one ball to the middle of the table. They will keep alternating between these two spots. And you will simply play each ball back to your training partner's backhand.
By doing this simple exercise you will train you brain to be used to switching between backhand and forehand. You can easily modify the training drill I described above by varying where your opponent places the ball. You could get them to play every ball to your backhand and use your footwork to switch between playing a backhand and forehand.
When doing this exercise, aim for consistency. Try to keep a record of how many times you can hit the ball in a row without missing for this drill.
Once you have become consistent at this drill you could ask your training partner to not simply switch between the backhand and forehand side but rather have them play 1 or 2 balls to the backhand followed by 1 or 2 balls to the forehand. This will really test out your ability to track the ball closely and learn to switch between both sides.
We cover the drills above in our Training Secrets Revealed DVD.
Try out these few drills and let me know if it helps you to improve your switching between backhand and forehand.
