Problem with returning sidespin service

Receiving

Hi Alois/Jeff,

I have noticed that I have a problem with sidespin service. Sometimes an opponent would give the ball both sidespin and topspin, and sometimes backspin and sidespin and also vary the length of the ball making it very difficult to return the service.  Sometimes the return goes high and out of the table and sometimes hits the net. How do I improve my game against such serves?

Hi Kaushik,

This is also to do with the angle of your bat.

If there is topspin on the ball you need to angle the bat over the ball more and with backspin, angle it up more to counteract the backspin.

As part of our Premium lessons we have a lesson on Receiving Principles that would help our Premium members as well.

Fake Movements

After the ball has left the server's bat, they can no longer affect the spin that is on the ball. Any movements after the contact are referred to as fake movements and are meant to confuse you as the receiver. You need to focus on the contact to read the spin.
