Hi JinMeng,

This is a similar serve to the one that Par Gerell does.  There was a bit of discussion on our site about this serve.  Take a look at What type of serve is Par Gerell doing?  This should help you with your query.

Thank you. I will take a look later and get back to you. many thanks. Just another query. Basically, as I mentioned about increasing spin and speed on my forehand pendulum, I have tried, however many times it has gone over the other end of the table. This is despite me getting the first bounce on the back part of the side of the table I am standing in. When it hits the opposition table, it is good. But most of the time it goes out. Any advice?

Yes, you need to practice it many many more times before it becomes efficient.

Thank you. In that case, do I reduce my power?? or what should I LOOK TOWARDS increasing and decreasing on the other hand?

Hi JinMeng,

A lot depends on your contact. If you swing your bat fast and hit the ball flat, it will fly off fast. However if you brush the ball finely you will generate a lot of spin and much less forward momentum. This is what makes serving such a fine skill.

Thank you very much. Could I just ask what's the effect (as seen in your video) of the bat changing from vertical(when you punch out) to horizontal(the follow through position)? And when we want to impart topspin or backspin, which part of the bat transition from vertical to horizontal is actually giving the spin? Many thanks.

Hi JinMeng,

The way I find it easiest to understand is to think how is the way I'm hitting the ball making it spin? If I hit down on the back of the ball I'm imparting backspin.  Also if I hit underneath the ball I'm also getting it to spin the same way, hence imparting backspin.

With the punch serve I'm coming across the ball so there's going to be sidespin. The question is whether my bat also hits the ball moving down or brushes up on the ball.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. In your video, did you do a topspin sidespin serve? But the serve is a downward action, if it has topspin, does it mean the opponent can see our bat moving up in this serve? And is this serve the typical guo yan serve? Just to confirm that this serve is what I was asking. Thank you and sorry for the trouble.

Yes this looks like a similar serve.

Thank you. Just a last query. How do you actually incoporate top spin since the action is a downwards and coming across the call?

Jeff Plumb

As you are coming across the ball you are always going to get sidespin. However you can get topspin by coming up on the ball a little. The swing can be more like a pendulum shape where the first part of the swing is downwards and the last is on the up. This way you can mix up the spin by hitting the ball just slightly on the up. It doesn't take a big difference in the action to get the topspin.

Thank you. Which is the contact point ON the ball to create the topspin/backspin? Many thanks.

For topspin you can contact the ball on the top of the ball and for the backspin slightly under the ball.

Thank you. I am sorry but I am still a bit confused. Assuming we break the action up into sidespin action and backspin action individually, for the backspin action, what is the direction of brush on the bat? Meaning it is a forward action from the tip of the bat to the end of the bat( the part where the wooden handle is)? Or is it a side to side action?(left to right) Or?Many thanks.

I would say it is a diagonal action.  It starts at the bottom and tip of your bat and goes diagonally across your bat face.  Just the direction of the swing changes.  For backspin you start a little higher and go downwards and with topspin you start lower and go up a little.

JinMeng Lai

JinMeng Lai Posted 12 years ago

Okay. Thank you. So it is an opposite diagonal action, meaning like a "X" shape, for topspin in comparison with backspin? Many thanks.

No, going on the same diagonal across the bat, just the angle of the swing differs.
