Hi Alois,

I have a service return question for you. I have difficulties returning serve of a penholder player. His serve has a lot of sidespin (maybe some also topspin?) and comes middle to long, mostly on my backhand side. It comes fast and low and I'm struggeling to return for several reasons.

It is hard to decide whether to attack or push and I have trouble to read the spin on his serve.

The result is that my push returns are usually getting too high so I get defensive, my topspin returns don't get on table often.

Thanks for your advise!

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

Perhaps the flick would be the best option.  Sounds like it may be too short to topspin and have too much topspin to push.  Give the flick a try next time and see how it works.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
