Hi Patrick,

To get a 3rd ball attack first you need to work on your serving.  The serve is what sets this up.  By improving serves, you will get easier returns because your opponent won't be able to control the ball to whee they want it to go.

Often a topspin serve or a variation of spin on the serve will create a higher return which is ideal for attacking. We have a lesson on this in our Master Classes titled Third Ball Tips.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
