hi coach,

i was wondering about the modification on the shake hand grip for the pendulum serves . why exactly is it done ? isn't it counterproductive to change back before the next shot is played ?

Also in doubles serving is difficult for me as my options are limited by the angle . What would be a good serve in doubles ?

thanks in advance

Hi Ram,

The reason we change our grip for the shakehand pendulum serve is that with the modified grip you can use your wrist in a wider range of movement.  Do this as a test.  Fristly grip your racket in the normal shakehand fashion and attempt to do a pendulum serve.  you will see that your wrist moves in a sideways action.  Then use the modified grip and you will see that your wrist movement in an up and down action.  This up and down movement gives you much greater range of movement.  The movement of the wrist is paramount as to how much speed you can get with your swing and therefore how much spin you can get on the ball.

You can still do a pendulum serve in doubles, just alter the direction you serve.  It is a  little more difficult but something that you can do.  You may try the reverse pendulm serve or backhand serve for doubles as well.  These may move at a better angle for you.
