Service Toss

Rules

Hi,

I practiced against someone the other day that uses a high toss serve quite frequently. However, on occasions as the ball came down it drifted too far and he caught the ball with his non-playing hand and tossed it again. So, the question is, are you allowed to do this without losing the point or is the ball immediately deemed 'In Play' as soon as the ball is tossed and if the serve isn't completed the opponent gains the point. Many thanks.

Hi Spike,

In this situation it would be your point.  You are correct that the ball is in play as soon as it leaves your hand or the player starts the service action.

Doubles Serving Rules

In this video we go over the somewhat complicated rules of serving for doubles in table tennis. There are a couple of extra rules for doubles that you don't apply to singles. In doubles you always serve from the right hand box diagonally to your opponent's right hand box. Each player has 2 serves each. If you've just been receiving then it's your turn to serve next.
