Serving short

Serving

Hi coach. I recently learnt a variety of serves and now i can myself decide how much spin or speed i am going to put on the ball. but none of these bounces even 2 times. I saw Jeff doing the serve in "KEEPING THE BALL SHORT" and it was amazing, but it doesn't seems that i can do that.

Also, when sometimes the ball bounces 2 times on opponent's side, my friends find it really difficult to return, so i want to learn it asap. Please mention the key points required in order to do such kind of services.

Regards,

Rahul

Hi Rahul,

It sounds like your serves are getting better.  To get the ball shorter, you need to contact the ball thinner.  The flatter the contact the further the ball will go.

Some other things that will help you is to focus on the ball keeping really low over the net.  Also put a target just on the other side of the table around 30 cm from the net.  Aim to hit this.  If you do this the ball will start to bounce a few more times on the other side which will make it harder for your opponent to attack.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
