Strategy
Hi guys! My question is as follows:
I play shakehand and the person I most frequently play with plays penhold. Is there any advice you could give me that can give me an edge over him. He tends to stay fairly close to the table but rarely smashes the ball, preferring to add spin instead.
Thanks,
Ash
Hi Ashutosh,
The main advantages of the shakehand in this situation is that your backhand can be stronger especially if they are not using the Reverse Penhold Backhand (RPB). The other area that you may be able to exploit is that it is more difficult to block a heavy topspin with the penhold grip as it is more difficult to turn your wrist over the ball and keep it down.
Good luck with that match up.
When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
