Equipment
Hi there,
Recently I attended the Arafura games as a class 3 wheelchair player. I noticed that several, but not all, players were playing with a combo of Short pips/inverted rubbers on their bats. Those playing with the short pips were particularly effective in combating my spinning serves and shots.
I personally play mostly off my b/h with an inverted rubber as I am more confident and strong there, than on f/h, where I am not so sure of my shots. Especially as using inverted rubber on f/h, I get "tripped up" in deciphering the spin on serves I'm receiving.
I am strongly considering putting a short pips rubber on a second bat to use on my f/h. But I would like to know which brand/type of short pips should I consider trying. One which would allow me to hit thru spin strongly, and not be too effected by it.
Would 1.5 or 1.8 be better than 2.0mm? Or maybe I should consider a longer pip rubber?
Many thanks in advance for your advice.
Hi James,
I watched a bit of you play there and saw a good improvement in your game.
I am not sure about the move to the short pips. You can definitely try it out and see if they feel comfortable. One of the Australian players uses Stiga Clippa. It has good control and allows him to hit through the ball well. Perhaps you could give that a try. Other readers with more short pips experience may have some advice as well.
I wouldn't use long pips on the forehand with your style. I think your attacking will keep developing.
I would go with 1.8mm. This will give you good control and enough speed and spin.
There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!
