Hello, I play against an opponent who loves to put sidespin to both sides of the table on his serve.  often times when i try to block the ball sails off the table.  what is a good method of return when defending against that wicked curve?

Thanks,

Raj

Hi Raj,

The idea is to see where the ball goes and then use the angle of your balde to counteract the spin and where it is taking the ball.

It sounds like the ball is going off the end of the table with this serve.  Therefore you would need to turn your bat down a little to stop the ball from going up.  I am sure withthe sidespin it isalso wanting to go off to one side.  In this case, face your bat to the opposite direction.

Good luck with it.

look at his bat carefully and aim for the starting point of the bat. let\'s say he swings from (YOUR) left-to-right, then you angle the bat to aim for your left (his right). If he puts lots of side spin you\'ll find that you may have to angle your bat a lot, almost pointing to your oponent, on contact.

What I do is just ignore the spin the first time around, put some backspin on the return and see if it works. Also try aiming for the center. That gives you an 80% chance of returning the ball. If you see that the spin is so strong that it just goes to the side when you touch the table, then think what spin it was and direct it the other way. Say the spin is from left to right use the spin and put the same spin in the return if it still doesn't work just keep trying, cause eventually you'll get one.
