Slowing down in footwork drills

Training

Hi guys,

I want to become better at rallying. So I try to become more consistent in training first. I feel like I have to slow down during the footwork drills to put more balls on the table. The more I slow down, the more balls I can keep on the table. But I feel like if I compromise the quality of the ball too much, I become too gentle and it is probably a bad thing. How to find the right balance between power and consistency to actually become better?

Hi Ilia,

You can change the pace of the drill often in the 5 or 10 minutes you are doing the drill.  You don't have to stay with the one pace.  In fact we would recommend you change the speed.  Increase till you feel that you are struggling with the speed as this is where you will be  playing in a games situation.  If you are struggling too much slow it down again for a few balls and then once you have your confidence or feel again, speed it up.

Remember in a match you very rarely have to hit 10 balls or more in a rally.

In this session you'll focus on increasing the speed of your footwork. To do this we ask you to forget about consistency and concentrate on speed. You should be playing at a pace where you can get around 4 or 5 balls on the table. If you are getting 10 or 20 balls on then you need to up your pace again. It's important to play right to the edge of your ability to actually increase your skill level. We also continue to develop the new serve you have chosen to work on.

Hi Alois,

Thank you for the reply. I never thought about changing the pace in drills. I will definitely try it next time.
