Strokes and Technique
Hello Alois and Jeff
I learn table tennis and I have a question. My coach says that if a ball has under-spin and it is really high, I will be able to smash it in. I tried this multiple times, but it still doesn't seem right. I smash it like I would smash a regular ball, but it always goes into the net. What can I do?
Thanks
Nishant
Hi Nishant,
It is possible to smash the ball that is high but your have to allow for the backspin. I see a lot of players have problems with this. You can try opening the angle of your bat slightly.
We do have an Ask the Coach response to a previous question for our Premium members. High backspin close to net

Try hitting the ball flat and fast into the table . Make sure the contact is for minimal time and it is flat.If you hit the ball even a bit slow, the backspin will tend to put it into net. So just go around the ball and smash hard .

Thanks Soham, I will try that.

It is not a well know fact at lower levels of table tennis that :
you can overcome spin with speed.
so more speed you generate less impact spin will have on you, since your speed will negate the spin.
Since ball is high, use a fast stroke to aim the ball directly down on the table.
You will find that if you are fast/powerful enough it will work.
High but heavy spin balls are mainly generated by a long pips or anti rubber block or chop of a spinny loop.
If the ball is low, push it back, if the ball is high hit it flat fast down on the table.. You will be surprised by your success soon.
Since it is easier to hit from forehand, try to use forehand more if possible.
have a coah give you high underspin balls and practise your fast flat hits down on table.
