Dear Coach,

I am a very new table tennis player and have no idea which type of bat to purchase.  I am rather overwhealmed by the different types that I've seen but I don't need any specifics when it comes to makes and models, what I'd really like to know, is what is good for what???

You get some that are spongier than others.  Are thicker ones better for beginners as they aren't as bouncy?  What are the advantages to more/less rubber?

You get some that are smooth on the surface and some are dimply.  Are dimply ones for beginners are you can get much greater spin with a lot less effort?  Why have a smooth bat at all?

Do you get different grips?  I find my hand gets really sweaty when I play... any advice?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated as I feel a bit lost amongst the racks of bats in my local sports shop!

Many thanks,

Donna

Hi Donna,

Go for a flat surface rubber first.   This needs to have some grip on it.  If you get a chance rub your finger across the rubber.  It should not feel like glass, it should have some grip.  Don't go for a bat with pimples on it.  They will tend to be a very cheap bat and you will struggle to develop your strokes with it.

Thickness: Go for something with a bit of sponge (the yellowish layer under the red or black rubber layer). This will give you some control and feel.

Depending on how much you have played, you should look for something that is mid range in price.  Around US$30 to $50 is a reasonable range for a bat.

As far as handles, it just needs to feel comfortable for you.  They come in a few different shapes.  Some are straight handles, some flared handles and some with a curved design.  The only difference here is the feel of the handle.

Choosing a bat can be daunting so just stick to these basics.

I just asked the club manager if I could try some of the bats that he had for sale and he said yes so you should probably try that
