Hi Coach,

Some of my opponents are doing side spin service with nearly at net height . Almost touching the net .  If I return with a chop or push ,They could smash it easily. Can you please tell me what would be the best way to return this type of service?

Thanks

Hi Venkatesh,

The best way if the ball is close to the net is to push the ball back.  The critical things are to keep the ball low and short back on the other side so that  your opponent can't attack that ball.

You don't need to get as much spin on the ball but really focus on the height and placement.  To get this shot right, you need to have a relaxed hand and soft touch to drop it back close to the net.

Take a look at the lessons on Receiving Options and also the lesson on The Push in Detail.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.

You can use backhand sidespin flick. It is best against backspin and sidespin serves.
