Tactical Returns Against Loopers

Strategy

I have often come across players who will chop very short, bringing the opponent like myself very close to the table and then hit a long and fast chop to the backhand. I have seen this tactic used quite often when players who are rated in the US at 2300+ going against players who are rated above them at 2500+ who have a much better flip then their opponents so they shy away from hitting too many short balls. Many times the 2500+ player is quick enough to step around and loop the long chop with their forehand for a winner.

My question is this...What are other options that I could use besides the common tactic of returning the ball with a short chop then long chop to the backhand side? Thanks :)

Hi Mike,

You could develop your short push so that you can stop your opponent from flipping easily.  That way you can play more than one short push.

You could try making a flick first as well.  Sometimes even if the flick isn't strong, just the change up could be effective.
