Hi Jeff and Alois

I've tried to play the Ma Lin short backspin serve, and it works. People may be surprised, and in any case it prevents attacks. But for my own 3rd ball it's a bit more difficult to know what to do. The return, if OK, is often short and low, not very adequate for an aggressive third ball attack with topspin. Could you explain me the tactics that fit with this kind of serve ?

Thanks,

Gilbert

Hi Gilbert,

Try to develop variation in the amount of backspin that you put on the ball.  This will mean that the receiver has a bit of doubt and will play the return safer which may mean that the return goes higher sometimes.

Even better is to serve the ball a bit faster so that the ball hits their bat faster and is more difficult for them to keep the return short.  This will allow an easier 3rd ball for you.

hmmmmm my strategies in this serve:

1. Heavy Malin serve pushed low , ready for a flick (3rd ball)

2. No spin same stroke , it will come out flying , ready for a flat Drive

3. fast and deep malin serve to get them of guard , adding sidespin sometimes helps

4. when countered with a deep push, loop it

5. when flicked, block it

5. The Good thing about this serve is that you can see the return the opponent is going to make since its limiting their options to attack, you cant loop a super short ball , then the options left are: short push, deep push, and a flick (based on my experience) , it delays your opponent to get back into his ready position

well this is what i have seen so far hope it helps :))
