Hi Alois,

In the recent match between Timo Boll and Fan Zhendong at the world championships, the commentators kept saying that Timo takes the ball early which is the reason for his higher success rate against the Chinese.

Could you please elaborate on what does it mean to take the ball early, how does it help and what are the risks associated?

Hi Abhinav,

Taking the ball early means he is hitting the ball closer to the bounce on his side.  It is more of a risk as the ball is rising.  He also has a very closed angle on his racket which works for him because he trains so much and is such a great player.

Taking Risks

It's important that you assess your opponent's skill level and your own skill level. Using this information you can then decide how much risk you need to put into your game. If your opponent is a lot more consistent than you, you may need to go for a bit more on each of your shots to try and force an error.
