Tennis elbow

Strokes and Technique

I'm 52 and playing for the last 5 years. Everybody says my forehand topspin drive is quite good and thats my main stroke. Two years back I suffered from shoulder problem due to rotator cuff muscle injury. Remained off game for full year. Recovered after doing specific exercises. Played again for a year. Now suffering from tennis elbow.

Somebody told me I might be tensing my arm too much during topspin drive, which I am.

Does forehand drive has to be played with relaxed arm? If so, how do I change my habit now?

How to recover from tennis elbow? I have been suffering for the last 2 months now. Have been playing off and on, but play results in more pain.

Hi Harpreet,

I can’t help you with recovery from Tennis elbow but you are right that keeping you arm relaxed will tend to help with preventing it.  It is best to see someone that is a professional such as a Physiotherapist.

Focus on the pain that you are experiencing and see if you can keep those muscles relaxed while playing the stroke.

In general while playing the stroke in practice, see how little effort you can take to make the stroke happen from start to finish.  When you play it without the ball, feel how simple and easy the movement can be.  See how close to this you can keep the movement of your arm when the ball is coming at you as well.

I used to have the same problem. There is a strap thingy you can buy at your local Walgreen's/ CVS pharmacy. That raps around your forearm and will help with the pain. You also might want to try some Advil for the pain.

Hello Harpreet,

I didn't really leave the game. I just bought the strap thingy put it on for a few days to get use to it. After I felt comfortable with it I started playing again. Also the Advil is a pain reliever and antiinflammatory which should help you. I know it did for me. If you are already using the rap thingy and some type of pain reliever then for sure you need to go back to your Doctor and see what they can do for you.

Do a Google search for "Theraband Flexbar".  It is a rubber bar used to do exercises for tennis elbow.  There are also videos on Youtube that show how to do the exercises.  It cured my tennis elbow in about 10 weeks.
