Too much bat...

Equipment

I got a new bat for Christmas this year, since my dad knows that i'm getting into ping pong.

It is a timo boll ALL blade, with xiom sigma pro on the forehand and butterfly sriver G3 on the other.

Before having this bat, I used a $5 bat from wal-mart. I have played with this bat 6 or 7 times now, and I'm finding it hard to do much with it. I can put wonderful amounts of spin on the ball, driving my friends crazy, but my consistency has definitely dropped.

I don't know what I should do, should I stow this bat away with a plastic cover on it till I am better at the game? or do you think that I will be able to adjust in a reasonable amount of time?

The main problems I have are my forehand topspin, forehand counterhit, and backhand topspin. When I hit them properly, my friends (equal skill level to me) can't return them 95% of the time, but the ball seems to be so hard to control off of this bat.

Please only recommend that I stop playing with this bat if you really think I couldn't get used to it, it's my baby and I love it!

Thanks in advance alois/jeff.

Hi Jack,

It sounds like you really want to keep using it.  Well OK, but you need to slow down your game a lot.  You need to do a lot of hitting at a slow pace to develop the feel of the bat and to develop control.

DUring practice, try to hit 100 then 200 ten 300 (and so on) balls in a row on both the forehand and backhand.  Once you develop this level of control you will start to be able to se the bat a bit better.

What a speedy response, thank you!

You said "Well OK," Do you mean to say that I would be much better off without it?

I think it is too fast for you straight away.  I wouldn't advised you to buy that speed of bat.  Right now you are better off with something slower.

try to get used to it, give it a month. close the bat angle more than you usually do when doing topspin shots and counterhits. dont have too big a swing, try to adjust to the extra speed, dont grip the bat too tightly that will help as well. after a month if its much too fast still you should try to get slower equipment. it may also be worth trying the bat the other way round eg forehand on backhand and backhand for forehand side. see if that works better.
