Topspin against long chop

Strokes

Dear Alois,

When my opponent hits a solid chop and the ball lands at the end of my side of table, and the ball bounces at least hip high, I am facing a problem.

As because the ball is long I am getting away from the table and trying to play a vertical forehand topspin. The ball is lifting but not getting enough pace and the ball is either dropping in my court or getting the net. And if I try to play a forward topspin then it is not being lifted at all.

Hope you will understand my problem. Please tell me the solution.

Best wishes to You, Jeff and Pingskills.

Hi Subhrajyoti,

The key is to swing bigger and faster.  Don't be afraid to get the finish a long way above your head to lift the ball over the net.

I love looping such balls :D
I enjoy when I am facing another defender and looping so that the ball has heavy topspin and dips just behind the net.

This way the defending opponent is forced to counter a heavy topspin ball that dips down very quickly while the player is far from the table.

Hi coaches!

Not good but I can return such long chops, because against such long chops i can start with low bat closer to the floor and finish high as shown in your video "topspin against backspin".

My problem is against short spinny chops. In this case i can  not loop,  i can not start with low bat because the ball is too close to the net. Lot of my loops go to the net.

What do you suggest?

As Alois said, high short spinny chop it is really an awkward ball. You can not counter the backspin starting below hip high as the ball is short. But you have to add topspin otherwise it will go to the net.

So, in my opinion the key should be to be set the mind prepared to finish high, still getting close the table and starting from the table level.

Alois please correct me if I am wrong.
