Unusual serve

Serving

Hi,

I was practicing many different serves I was trying to learning, and mixing about with angles and strokes, when I came across a very unusual technique. It starts with a toss at about medium height, you follow the ball with your bat on the forehand side until about net height. At this point, you almost catch the ball with the bat, and with a quick swipe it turns into a fast serve with a lot of curve. It doesn't resemble any brushing, pushing or smashing hit. It works well on some, but I am just curious.

Is this serve legal, and if so is it effective?

Hi Shane,

This is a legal serve.  It sounds like it is effective for you.  A serve is effective if your opponent is having problems returning it effectively.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
