Using torso rotation in forehand topspins

Strokes

Dear PingSkills,

I am trying to practice rotating my torso to generate more power in forehand topspin strokes. Do I need to use the torso for both fast and slow strokes? Is it good to keep the elbow position relative to body consistent throughout the stroke for more shot accuracy?

Hi Kenneth,

You can use your torso with both fast and slower strokes.  Just the speed of the rotation and extent will vary.

The elbow will stay relatively similar but there will need to be an extension at the end of the topspin stroke. If you are playing a slow controlled stroke you can keep the elbow in a similar relative position.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
