Equipment
i was just wondering what combo's you guys use?
Hi Kevin,
I use a Butterfly Primorac-FL blade with Sriver 2.1mm on both sides. I find Sriver a great attacking rubber without being too fast so that you still have enough control when blocking and returning serve. By using speed glue with Sriver, you retain a good level of control but you can really get a lot of power on your attacking strokes and it makes counter-spinning your opponents loops a little easier.
What do other people use? Post your own combinations below and let us know why you think it is a good combination.
Update: This question was asked many years ago before speed glue was banned. Now I am using the PingSkills Touch with Xiom Vega Pro.

I use a Yasaka Ma Lin carbon blade and Yasaka Mark V rubbers (max thickness) on both my backhand and forehand. I am an agressive player and like very much the Yasaka products.

Blade: JZ Excalibur 5.0 (german manufacturer, made of balsa/carbon)
rubber fh: Stag Explosive 2,2mm
rubber bh: Kokutaku Tuple 007 1,8mm
Very light and very good control with enough acceleration for attacking
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 17 years ago
I use anything that I can get my hands on at the moment. I have a very old Power Drive blade that I got in 1990! Still feels great, but a lot of the younger players laugh at me for using what they commonly refer to as "The Beast".

my two rubbers are stiga drive
hehehehe
what should I replace?
Chris Unknown Posted 16 years ago
Try replacing your rubbers with Mark V, Sriver EL, Skyline 3 or Hurricane 2. Or if you have a wider budget, Nittaku Hammond, Bryce, Omega or you could even try Andro\'s Plasma series.
I use a M. Maze blade, with a Mark V/Sriver El on backhand, and DHS Skyline 3 on forehand.

Is it a tradeoff between the thickness of the rubber and the control that you get with it ?
What is the ideal thickness if my game is more attacking and top spin is being one of the powerful weapons of mine.

I just got my new bat today.
It is a Stiga Hybrid Wood with Yasaka Mark V 2.00mm on both sides.
I find the Yasaka Mark V's Rubbers are very spinny when there is hard contact. The Stiga Hybrid Wood is a great blade because the sweet spot is big and you get the explosive contact with the ball.

I have a Tibhar Rapid Carbon blade and Tibhar Rapid 2.0mm rubbers on both sides.
Its a very light bat with good control on both attacking and blocking:)
Lionel Unknown Posted 15 years ago
Hi Michael,
Good to know you are using Tibhar Rapid. If from 1 to 10, how do rate it for brushing-oriented looping (more brushing, and less knocking) against the incoming heavy back-spin ball? 10 meaning fairly easy, without much consideration in terms of racquet-ball contact angle, and not needing swinging hard and vertically upward to get the ball over the net. And 1 being very hard, and almost all attempts get to the net.
In short, is this rubber a High Throw angle Rubber (which is close to 10) or low throw (which is close to 1)?
Thanks, am considering to get one Tibhar Rapid or Rapid D-Tecs Soft.....

For BH : Kokutaku Taiwan Magic Rubber with seperated sponge
Sean Unknown Posted 15 years ago
Blade: Timo Boll Spirit
FH Rubber: Tenergy 05
BH Rubber: Tenergy 05
It was quite expensive, but I find that it was worth every single dollar!
Charles Unknown Posted 15 years ago
I changed from Primorac with Srivers to Timo Boll Spirit with Srivers. The reason why I have Srivers on TBS is that I need to get used to the feel of the blade first before I try anything else. I know that Primorac to TBS is a big leap in terms of power, spin and technology but I am confident that I reached my potential with Primorac and need to transfer to another blade. I'll also change my rubbers from Sriver to Tenergy since I read reviews saying Sriver and Tenergy have some similar characteristics. If Tenergy will be too fast for me, I'll just do an experiment. Remove the topsheet of Tenergy and Sriver and stick the topsheet of Sriver to Spring Sponge. The reason is that Tenergy has High Tension which means that the topsheet isn't Sriver but Sriver G2. So if I replace the topsheet with Sriver, that will slow down things and still get Spring Sponge. If my experiment is a sucess, I'll write it here.

i get asked a lot of questions on the butterfly inspirit i use it on my back hand for people who like to smash i just have to worry about hitting the net and the angle because the heavy topspin just doesn\'t effect the rubber and its not long pimples so good for attacking to
Lionel Unknown Posted 15 years ago
Hi Mario and Jackson....
Good to know both of you are using some rubbers which I am researching...
Now to Mario... Tibhar Nimbus Sound --> how's the throw angle, high throw or low throw? If high throw then is it very easy to loop heavy backspin balls?
Now to Jackson... Donic Coppa JO Gold --> same question above, throw angle, high or low? If high throw then is it very easy to loop heavy backspin balls?
Thanks in advance to both!

Lionel Unknown Posted 15 years ago
Thanks a lot Mario and Jackson,
Both your answers are affirmative to me because indeed, my playing style is exactly a thin brushing spin loop category. I always play with top spin using friction brushing rather than knocking onto the ball during looping, thus I am quite glad either of the rubbers you are playing now is suitable to my style. All the best to both of you in your experience with the equipment you have.... Thanks...
Thus, I think I might be using a combo like this..,
Blade: Currently Butterfly Chinese Real
FH (RED) : Donic Coppa JO (either platin or gold depending on the sponge hardness, I will go for the softer sponge considering my style of brushing spin loop)
BH (BLACK) : Currently Friendship 729 Geospin Tacky

I use:
Butterfly Cutlass
FH: Tenergy 05 2.1mm
BH: TSP Curl P1-R

interesting combination!
I did play around with the TSP Curl P1-R once upon a time. Do you use OX? Pretty cool being on the junior squad, and having the opportunity to be coached by Simon! Love watching videos of Simon's matches, and especially his 'cho'! ;)
Style of Joo Se Hyuk? Fantastic! Would be fun to watch your matches too. If I were a teenager again, I wouldn't mind trying to model my game after him. Need a lot of fitness I expect.
Good luck!

Setup 1:
Donic Senso Appelgren Allplay (Chinese pen); FH:Donic Vario Big Slam; BH: XIOM Yanus DF
Setup 2:
XIOM Fuga (Chinese pen); FH: Andro Plasma 380; BH: JUIC 999 Elite Ultima
I'm a Chinese pen style attacker and I found that my earlier setup, with a Wang Hao blade and Hurricane 2 and Skyline 2 rubbers, was a bit heavy, and not really forgiving enough for my level. So I went totally the other way, and went for slower rubbers. The Appelgren is really light and well-balanced, and the wood is pretty soft. The Vario Big Slam feels great on it. I should probably have put the same rubbers on the other racket so that I could compare the blades. The Yanus DF feels OK on the backhand, but I'm thinking perhaps going for Vario Big Slam on both might make things easier.

Hey Alois, Jeff and PingSkill supporters,
I\'m using RITC 729 2040 Blade, DHS Neo Hurricane 2 on the forehand and Palio CJ8000 Biotech 36-38 degrees on backhand. I have an looping + counter driving/attacking style, and plays a mixture of passiveness and aggressiveness, level of aggressivness depending on the opponent and timing, but most of the time aggressive.

hi everyone, especially you guys at pingskills.com! i enjoyed a lot watching your videos - especially Alois and Brett in the exhibition. The last point beats everything...
Ah, this is a forum about the blades and the rubbers we all use. Well, ok, back in the times, when I was playing, i used this combination:
a) Stiga Johannson with both Srivers, then
b) Bfly Tamca Gergely with Srivers 2.0 (as far as i remember). It was a good blade, very quick, I liked the combination with these "hall of fame" rubbers - it gave me a lot of speed, if necessary, still being able to maintain control, i am (or i was) more of an allround player type, not too aggressive.
After i finished playing tournaments i got myself an another blade, not a carbon as Tamca, it is
c) Bfly Mazunov OFF+ also with Srivers (I guess there wasn't any other rubber we could buy back then...). A stiff wood, very quick, but i personally think it has a wee bit more control than Tamca. Don't know, it's just how I feel about it.
Ok, so that's it... Good luck and God bless you all!

My wife is learning this sport and I need help recommending which blade and rubbers I should get for her. She plays tennis and is a bit of a "full swing" player. I would imagine a neutral / attacking blade with speedy forehand rubber and spinny back hand rubber.
By the way, I use BTY Sardius, Sriver G3 FX for forehand and Sriver G3 for backhand.

This was the bat my coach bought for me when i first started my training years ago, as i have no idea about rackets at that time.
my other bats:
Primorac carbon off+
LKT zebra carbon+hinoki with BH tenergy05 and FH TG Skyline 2. This is my favorite bat as it has a very soft feel considering it is has carbon and i can adjust the sweet pot to either off-,off, or off+. As for now, i like it as off- as it gives me more control, feel with lesser speed as i can have more balls getting into the table during practice. and as i progress, i can increase the speed little by little..

I've bought a timo ball spirit with Tenerfy 05-fx 2.0 thickness for FH & BH. Only played once so far and very pleased with it so far. However the backhand seems quite fast and with my other bat (Primorac with Mrak V GPS) I seem to get better control but not enough power or spin.
I guess it is a case of practising and getting used to the new setup. I originally did ask for 1.8 on BH but received a 2.0. Do you think I'd be better off getting it swapped?
Open yo suggestions and comments.
Steve Chatsworth Posted 12 years ago
Sorry for the typos.. It's a Tenergy 05-FX.
I ORIGINALLY ASKED FOR 1.9 thickness on BH.
😃
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 12 years ago
Steve,
I would not worry about the difference of the thickness. Tenergy 05 is a very fast rubber. Since you have spent the money I would take some time to get used to it. GIve it a month. It is a fairly big step up from the Mark V GPS. It will take time.

Hey guys,
At the Moment I use Donic Schildkröt Carbotec 50 of blade with Donic Schildkröt Energy QRC rubbers with 2,1 mm sponge, but I'm going to change to tibhar speedy spin FX premium of-with 2,1 mm sponge. I think they are good rubbers to make very spinny topspins, because the rubbers have very much friction, so it's very easy to counter the spin of your enemy, and you can generate your own spin. also it haves a very soft sponge, so you can make a very Arcuated fly path. And when you buy it with 2,1 mm sponge, you can Get also a lot of speed on your attacking strokes. i can just recommend it!

i bought a pre-made bat because in india table tennis is not very popular and separate rubbers and blades are not available here. even butterfly bats are not available in the capital of the country - New Delhi. So i bought a Stiga Revtech bat with Stiga EVO rubber on both BH & FH. (speed 82, spin 87, control 52). at first it was difficult to adjust to these rubbers as i used a slow rubber before, and these rubbers were really bouncy ones so the ball went really fast, but now i successfully adjusted to the rubbers and have improved a lot using this combination.

hi,
now im still using my timo boll blade with tenergy 05 and butterfly tackifire
but i want to buy a donic epox blade with tenergy 25 rubber...
i dont know it suitable or not...
Lukas Oberbanscheidt Posted 11 years ago
I use TSP Award All and Tibhar Volcaninon both sides with 2,0 mm
I think about buying an Hurricane 3 on my forehand.
Lukas Oberbanscheidt Posted 11 years ago
Hey mr.Bean :DD
My tip is when you buy an epox Blade, dont buy tenergy 25, buy tenergy 64. Epox is a Kind of fast blade, so its better With tenergy 64 they are really fast. thats for your backhand. on your forehand buy a DHS Hurricane 3. so you can play very fast and spinny and with the hurricane you have excellent controll.
Enoch Oppong Posted 11 years ago
I use for my rubber forehand stiga mendo energy and for my backhand donic coppa jo gold and my blade donic appelgren Allplay

I use a
Blade: 729-6010
Fh: Stiga evo
bh: RITC Tackspeed 2000
Michael McKendry Posted 11 years ago
Here is my combination which I am using at the moment:
Blade: Pingskills touch
FH: Xiom vega pro
BH: Xiom vega Europe
I had vega pro on both sides at one point, but I found the vega pro a bit too fast for my backhand, so I went to a slightly slower rubber.
I have also used the following rubbers:
Blade: Pingskills touch
FH: Lion 505 (pingskills rook) I have tried to buy some more of these rubbers, but I can not find any on the internet.
BH: Also Lion 505
I highly recommend this last set for beginners, very good control, with enough power to get you started.
I then upgraded to mark v on both BH and FH. After that I upgraded to Xiom rubbers^^
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 11 years ago
If anyone wants to get the Lion 5 Star rubbers let us know.
Justin O'Toole Posted 11 years ago
Rubbers and blades matter but not alot. You need something that complements your style of game, this will work to your strengths. I think the most common rubbers are sriver i used to use them a long time ago. Srivers are a safe bet but it comes down to practice practice and more practice.
Does not matter what you are using if you can't keep the ball on the table. Steddy players who don't make much mistakes are the hardest to play because the rarely give you a free point. Practice practice and a passion for table tennis is what will make you a better player not the latest best blades and rubbers. Work your way up slowley with your equipment choice and you should be able to use many combinations.
Justin O'Toole Posted 11 years ago
Hey fellow ping pong players I use Andro Hexer hd rubbers i find them awsome. My blade is a Donic Ovtcharov carbo speed blade its totally brilliant. I find this combination awsome Like Bruce Lee it packs a very mean punch. Most of all i like the controll factor with my blade and rubber.

Justin O'Toole Posted 11 years ago
I still have the Donic Ovtcharov blade and the Andro hexer hd rubbers. I am very happy with them. All I will do now is when needed buy new Hexer hd's. This combination has been easy for me to control and has given me some frightening power-spin.
Remember to have two bats in case one breaks or something happens to it. They must be very similar in the way they perform, so you can keep good rhythm. Control is the most important factor in a blade power and spin comes last. If you can't control your blade-rubbers you will make unforced-forced errors. Get the ball on the table use good accuracy then you can slowly upgrade your bats.

Jon Ferguson Posted 11 years ago
Currently using a Re-Impact balsa blade, with Juic 999 CHN on f/h (1.5), & Donic Akkadi L2 long pips on b/h (0.6).
Very responsive setup, with good feel thru the balsa blade. The blade feels 'soft' in short play, but the catapult effect really kicks in when you start looping/attacking. Many gears, good combo for defensive player.
Don't need 2mm rubbers on these blades, as control suffers, plus it adds extra weight.
The lightness of this setup really helps blocking, enabling fast movement of the blade, encouraging shorter, quicker movements.
Highly recommended.

I use mark v for f/hand joola smart for b/hand on joola carbon.
it gives good control, speed and spin

Timo Boll Forte off - Blade

Hi Andrew,
Pryde is quite a fast rubber. It will be a big step up from the Drive. May be better to go for Mark V first.

Wayne Sy Posted 11 years ago
Hi I just wanted to ask for your opinion guys. I am planning to make Donic Baracuda as my forehand and acuda s2 as my backhand. I am going to use a butterfy gergely alpha as my wood. Would it be a good combination? By the way my style is that I like to hit hard instead of brushing, My body is also a bit stiff in most of my strokes, thanks :)
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 11 years ago
Maybe others can help you out with this one.
Wayne Sy Posted 11 years ago
Thanks Sir Alois, i'm looking forward for the response of others :)
Sammy Serea Posted 11 years ago
Hey Wayne,
Well, Barracuda is a rubber made for spin, so if you don't brush, but instead like flatter and harder hitting, I honestly don't think this is the rubber for you. I think you would much better enjoy a Bluefire M1, Bluefire JP 01, Acuda S1 Turbo, or better yet Coppa X1 Turbo Platinum on your forehand.
Cheers,
Sam
Sammy Serea Posted 11 years ago
Also, to answer the original question, I currently use STIGA Rosewood V FL with STIGA Calibra Tour S in max thickness, on both sides.
I like Rosewood V because it's a premium blade, not too heavy, featuring an all wood construction, consistently weighing in at 83 grams with the very comfortable FL handle, providing very good speed, but not at the expense of control. But the area where it shines is the feel - it is so smooth, plush, yet connected. It is by far my favourite blade in 20 years of playing ping pong.
I also very much like the new Calibra Tour S rubbers because they use a soft sponge (that's where the S comes from), which offers better control than harder sponges, but unlike other soft sponge rubbers, it is still very fast and powerful. It also features a new type of top sheet using nano technology, which looks matt, almost like an used rubber, but it is very grippy and spinny despite the look.
Besides the speed, the spin and the control, as a bonus, the sound it makes on ball impact is just awesome ;)
Also, from a purely practical point of view, the matt top surface seems to collect waaay less dust compared to the shiny top surface rubbers, so I can play for longer without wiping my bat and I also don't feel the need to use protecting sheets all the time.
That's it from me.
Cheerios,
Sam

My Racket:
Blade: Donic EPOX power all-round blade
forehand rubber: DHS Hurricane 3 neo
backhand rubber: Donic blue fire M1
Is this a good combination ? please tell me so i could change my rubber at once because i am having a tournament
Wisley Lynn Posted 11 years ago
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 11 years ago
Hi Wisley,
They are all good quality equipment. Without seeing you play it is impossible to know if it is right for you. We always get players to focus more on their training than their equipment because this is far more critical to making improvements.
Wisley Lynn Posted 11 years ago
Thanks for telling me i was thinking about changing my forehand rubber to donic rubber because it has more spin!
Sammy Serea Posted 11 years ago
Hey there,
Blufire M1 is one of the fastest and spiniest rubbers out there (and definitely the fastest and spiniest rubber that Donic makes.
I highly recommend it for your forehand.
Cheers,
Sammy
atharva sakharkar Posted 11 years ago
can any one suggest me a good combination currently im using a premade racket bt i want to buy a new custom made racket and my budget is around 30 to 35 $
Sammy Serea Posted 11 years ago
I don't know anything that fits that budget speciffically, but a rather cheap set-up that I highly recommend is Donic Epox Topspeed blade (one of the cheapest woods Donic makes, but very fast and with great feel), and pair it with any soft and spinny OFF rubbers...
Cheers,
Sam
atharva sakharkar Posted 11 years ago
Thanks fr advice sammy serea ill chose that blade wid two mark 5 rubbers or a sriver nd mark 5

My Racket:
Blade: hallmark aurora
forehand: butterfly tackiness 2.0mm
backhand rubber: dr.neubareur allround premium
is that anyway to improve my forehand looping by using a rubber which work well with balsa wood? any recommend? the aurora forehand make me so difficult to brush the ball/topspin like before.
Thanks

I would try a little faster rubber like Mark V.
Wisley Lynn Posted 11 years ago

I am a Chinese new penal-style player,and I use a STIGA nano OC bat.
Forehand rubber: HurricaneIII
Backhand rubber: YASAKA zap
This bat's thickness is 5.8mm, and it is very light, only 82g. This offensive bat is very powerful both near the table and far away from the table. It is of very good control. What a nice bat. I love her.
Sammy Serea Posted 11 years ago
I've updated my rubbers to Bluefire M1 and Bluefire JP01 from Calibra Tour S on both sides, using the same Rosewood NCT V Legend blade...
Setup is now a lil' heavier, but still quite maneuvrable, but the harder blue sponge allows me to play aggressively even at mid distance which is my preffered position...
Cheerios,
Sam

bh: 729 super fx!!!
Derek Walker Posted 10 years ago
I have a butterfly primorac off- Blade and want to put some all round controlled rubbers on it. It will be used by an intermediate league player who wants to slow down his attacking play and get more shots on the table by practising slow looping and controlled topspin shots.
I was thinking maybe Yasaka mark v 1.8 or Sriver 1.9.
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 10 years ago
They would be suitable rubbers for good control and still be able to generate enough spin.
Furqan Hashmi Posted 10 years ago
my only blade is btyprimorac carbon fl. i love it but i have alot of rubbers and use all of them. it mostly depends who i am playing with. i have tenergy 80, yasaka pryde. yasaka m5, xiom veg pro, andro rasant, dhs h3 neo. i usually use the vega pro with dhs hr neo.

Shoumik Chakraborty Posted 10 years ago
Hi coach please suggest me if I am wrong with my forehand/backhand rubber which I am using, or if any of my data(my interception has any flaw)
I am no expert but my suggestion might work out for new players
I have tried different combination: (I am 24 years old started playing 2 years back when I was 22) I am just jotting down all the styles which I have played for more than 1 month as I have done many other combinations which did not work out so I have not enlisted them.
I think this might help the new players to choose their racket.(Ply, FH and BH)
If you are playing aggressive games use a spin rubber(eg: Mark V, Siber, GKI Hybrid......) in forehand and a hard rubber like (Adidas, Coppa gold<preferable>,.....)
If you feel than you are not good with your backhand or if you are not able to use your racket against the spin services I will suggest to use Pimple rubbers/ Anti rubber.
Users can start with Super Anti or Yasaka Anti (Not Pimples), but I will suggest of using of Phantom007 and not the others(Phantom 008/009/011) rubbers it lets the user to counter attack and even it reduces the spin attack.
I will say using Sticky rubber wont be solving your problems in backhand, but using pimples(long/short) in back hand and sticky rubbers in fore hand it might let you to a better position with various spin attack. Even using Mark V or Coppa Gold in forehand provides a window of opportunity for attacking.
For the pimple user I will suggest Coppa Gold which generates less spin than the Mark V, as it has a very good punch. When you use Anti/Pimple rubbers it generates backspin and when pushed by opponent provides an oppurtunity to hit the ball hard
-------------- Attacking rubber on both sides----------------
1. FH: Mark V BH: Siver FL Ply: GKI Euro Classic (Did not suite)
2. FH: Mark V BH: Mark V Ply: GKI Euro Classic (Did not suite)
------------ Pimples in Back hand-------------------------------------------------
3. FH: Mark V BH: Phantom007 Ply: GKI Euro Classic
(Suited game- Phantom007 changed my style but its very effective in long run even slow topspin can be generated but it misses the jabbing capability and also countering can't be done)
4. FH: Coppa Gold BH:Phantom007 Ply: GKI Euro Classic
(Suited & game performance enhanced because of the punch in Coppa gold)
5. FH: Coppa Gold BH:Phantom007 Ply: Yasaka Carbon ply- All rounder (Suited game performance enhanced as the rubber suited the ply)
6. FH: Coppa Gold BH: Akkadi Ply Yasaka Carbon ply- All rounder
(Suited - Akkadi is good for backhand flat and jab the chop is nice but needs more control, as it tend to generate backspin resulting in more flight in the ball, it was easy to move from Phantom007 to Joola Octopus and Saviga Vbut Akkadi takes a little time to adjust, it is much dangerous than any other pimples in its class and even it out classes Joola Octopus)
7. FH: Coppa Gold BH: Joola Octopus Ply: Yasaka Carbon ply- All rounder (Suited game performance enhanced)
8. FH: Coppa Gold BH: Joola Octopus Ply: Donic Waldner All play
(Suited game performance enhanced drastically- Octopus is a good rubber but its just hyped- it is just like Phantom007 even while hitting the ball, the top spin generated is too low. It is just a costly version of Phantom with a little more grip on the ball)
9. FH: Siver EL BH: Saviga V Ply: Donic Waldner All play
(Suited, improved my top spin but missing the punch in the fore hand, for my backhand Saviga V might be cheap but its a very good rubber better than Octopus while attacking the opponent and good for chopping near the table as well pushing the ball and hitting hard on the flight and chop balls- can generate slow top spin with punch, it even absorbes the spin very nicely leaving with the spin-less ball to play)

Alex/Jeff,
Here are my two combinations:
1. Yasaka Extra Special with Rakza7 soft 2.0 on both sides
2. Andro Super Core Cell Off+ with T05 Max on FH and Donic Coppa Gold on BH
I'm looking to change my rubbers on Andro Super Core. Have decided rakza7 soft for BH. But still not sure about FH. How will be Andro Rasant 2.0? On FH I'm more of a mid distance topspin player.
Thanks
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 10 years ago
Hi Rohit,
I like the feel of Rasant.
rohit bansal Posted 10 years ago
Hi Alex,
Let me be more specific to extract more from you :-)
Currently I have T05 max on my FH on Andro super core cell off+, which I want to change. I want the new rubber to be more of less same as T05 but with a lower throw angle and a bit more control (and ofcource a bit cheaper than T05). Does Rasant solve this purpose? If you have any other suggestions, please share.
Thanks
Alois Rosario from PingSkills Posted 10 years ago
The rubber that I liked and use at the moment is XIOM Vega Pro. I think it fits into all of those criteria.

I guess some update for Jeff's initial answer would be a good idea, since that's the first one you read, and it is not dated. Not being aware of how old that thread was, I have been quite surprised when I saw him mentioning playing with speed glue !

Recently just won a tournament in doubles event at my faculty, placed second in singles. Crazy forehand 3rd ball attack with this setup, if you know what you're doing. It was my strongest weapon to reach the finals. The backhand is very good for active blocking and punching.
