Attacking a higher dropshot

Table Tennis Strokes and Technique

Greetings PingSkills Team

recently I learned that there is one serious issue in my game: when I chop and my opponent does a long/mid-long mid-height ball, I need to attack it.
But as this mostly happens when I am far from the table and it is very difficult to use forehand in this situation, because I recover from backhand chop usually.
If I would want to use forehand,I would need to perform 3 more steps forward and also I would need to turn around in 180°.
So my question is: how can I attack such a ball using backhand?
The rally in this video should give you a good example of what I am talking about:

Thanks
DK

Hi DK,

The principles of the Backhand smash are the same as we show you in the tutorial on the Backhand Smash.  The key for you is to move in fast enough to get position to make the stroke.  You have to be close to the table to have a chance of hitting this on the table.

I have already seen the video.
However,I seem to do something bad.
My shots are mostly going behind the table or into the net base.
Also I seem to have a lot of unwanted sidespin on my shot.

It may be a matter of getting to the ball quicker.  If you don't get there early enough then you should choose to chop the ball again.  Only when you get there early and the ball is high then attempt the smash.

I am often scolded by my coach when doing this, and also this happens even if I am close to the table before I make the pre-smash push.
There must be something bad with my stroke then

See dude, instead of defense play aggressively and attack . Give ur opponent a chance to defend.

being a defender is not so good. But by the way what type of racket do u use ........based on that I can suggest u to attack or defend

Ummmm, defence isn't bad, it's more of adjusting to your opponent's weakness. I don't get your comment DK.

D K Posted 6 years ago

Benzene:what exactly dont you get?

Aniketh: I am quite in trouble if my opponents defends unless he defends with heavy chop purely. I do not have any power and my style fully revolves around using my opponent's power against him. Also I do not like risking and I have an advantage when the rally lasts very long.
I currently switched to Rakza7Soft (FH),Victas Matsushita blade and TSP Curl P4 Chop (BH)

Oh...ok..ok....then it's good for defense but try to chop till the opponent's edge table

D K Posted 6 years ago

Aniketh,I am not sure how do you mean

I think he meant that you should chop that ball, making sure that the ball lands at the edge of your opponent's end of the table, furthest from the net, like a long low chop.

PS I don't get what was the reason your coach scolded you.

If your backhand using long pips, I would suggest putting some side spin on when smash. Long pips is not a stable rubber, by putting side spin would be less likely to miss and can still have the power.

Benzene: yea, that is what I usually attempt to do unless I want to strictly enforce short game.
My coach scolds me when I push an attackable ball due to the lack of time.
He only says I should have been faster and that I should rather fail an attack than succeed with a push.

Tommy,I am fully capable of twiddling my bat while preparing such a stroke.
The fact is that although I can do a forehand sidespin loop quite consistently,I do not think it is good to use it with backhand in a situation where the ball must get at the table as soon as possible.
I can aim effectively with sidespin from a distance, but at 50cm it hardly has effect I think.

Hmmmmm, that's one situation I encountered... (I presume attackable means a high ball that can be smashed) I will usually, if I'm far from the table and a high short ball comes, run forward, use the already present forward momentum from my entire body, (and swing my arm accordingly with a closed racket angle of course), to smash the ball with my backhand. You need not smash with forehand. Joo Sae Hyuk did smash with his backhand in his match against Dimitrij Ovtcharov during T2APAC.

Benzene, you are exactly describing the situation I am encountering.
The problem on my side is that I miss the ball a lot. The ball keeps going directly forward, directly down,or sideways.
I also keep hiting a lot of fingers in this case.

In this case, in a match situation, I'll agree with coach Alois that you should chop it again. But... Maybe during training, you practice what your coach says and try smashing the ball with your long pips backhand until you manage to polish up that attack before using it in match?

D K Posted 6 years ago

I am trying, but my coach strictly insists on me using forehand.
I want BOTH SIDE attack if needed, though.
I would need three additional steps to use forehand in such a situation not mentioning the 180°spin

Hmmm....

Aniketh Danam

Aniketh Danam Posted 6 years ago

If ur coach insists u like that .....then play a match with ur respective coach and use skills which u would like to use

D K

D K Posted 6 years ago

I play matches with him at trainings about once per 2 weeks, but he keeps devastating me playing only variable-length dead balls lacking energy to my backhand.

Aniketh Danam

Aniketh Danam Posted 6 years ago

Benzene Chiral Posted 6 years ago

What do you mean by "playing only variable-length dead balls lacking energy to my backhand."?

D K

D K Posted 6 years ago

I doubt there is any non-premium video I havent seen yet :D

Benzene,I meant that he keeps playing balls with no speed or spin, aims for my backhand and varies only length, and sometimes height.
