Serving
Hi Alois,
Was wondering if it is legal to serve where the (under spin) serve returns to server side after bouncing once on receiver end. What are your thoughts on attempting this.
thanks.
Hi Saqib,
It is definitely legal. It would be the servers point if the receiver doesn't touch the ball.
However it is not a very effective serve because the serve needs to be very slow and it is easy for the opponent to read the spin and come around the side of the table and hit it away. That is why you don't see it done at a higher level.
Serving in table tennis is about much more than just getting the ball into play; it's about setting the pace, controlling the game, and exploiting your opponent's weaknesses from the very first touch. In This Video, You'll Discover:

Hi Alois,
Thanks for your response. As a follow up, in attempting to hit the ball so close to the net, ones racquet ends up crossing into the either end, would that be considered a legal shot?
thanks.
Hi Saqib,
Your bat is allowed to go over to the other side of the net as long as you don't touch the net.
