Backhand push with backspin

Table Tennis Strokes and Technique

I picked up table tennis a couple of months ago after not having played for 13 years. I bought a new racket bacause the old one simply didn't had any grip left (was also a cheap pre-assembled one). I now have:

racket:DONIC "Epox Offensiv" which is an offensiv- racket.

forehand rubber: DONIC "Coppa JO Silver" thickness 2mm

backhand rubber: DONIC "Quattro Formula" thickness 2mm

It took me some time to adjust to play with a lot more grip on the racket than I'm used to, but struggling a bit on the push with backspin. The ball doesn't seem to loop very much but rather goes very straight on through just barely over the net and I really have to do a lot of effort comparing to my oponent/training partner not to shoot the ball into the net. It seems I have to do a lot more effort than my oponents to put some backspin in it and still get it over the net. Is this a result of the racket or the rubbers?

Hi Thijs,

This could be because of the rubbers. If you have gone from rubbers with no grip to some decent rubbers, it will be quite a shock. However persist with it because Table Tennis is a game of spin. You need to master spin to improve your game.

Try and do some training drills where all you do is push the ball back and forth to your training partner. Try to improve your consistency by recording how many pushes you can do in a row without missing.

Watch our video on the backhand push and try to angle your bat a bit more to counter the spin. Also by trying to generate your own backspin you will also counter their backspin.

Try this out and let me know how you get on.
