First match after a long injury

Mental Preparation

Hi Alois and Jeff,

Because of a knee injury I haven't played for about one and half year. Now I'm fully fit again, but I have two problems. The first thing is, although I know my knee is stable, I think too much about it, which inhibits me from moving "normally" at the table. The second thing is, I can't really remember my last match and now it feels strange to play my first match after that long time and I'm more nervous than I usually am. What can I do?

Hi Stefan,

Firstly well done on getting your self back to being able to play.

What you describe about the insecurity is perfectly normal.  I think this is a natural part of the process of recovery.  As you start to play and feel that things are normal, you will gain confidence.

The same will be for your confidence in playing matches.  Get into the matches, don't worry too much about the results to start with.  You will start to gain confidence and remember the feelings of playing.

All the best with the matches.  Let us know how you feel after it.
