hi coach, first and foremost, i want to appreciate all your effort and please keep doing this nice job. My question is, (1) how can i win a match against someone that has a higher level of play than me? What are the key to outsmarting and winning the match? (2) what are the tips on how to receive serves effectively without being dis-advantaged after receiving the serve. (3) how and what should i do to develop a good serve to my own advantage?

Hi Kinakachi,

The fist important thing is that training is the biggest factor that will help you to achieve all of those things.

When playing any opponent the key to winning is to work out the best tactics to use against them.  This will give you your best opportunity with the skills that you have.

If you subscribe to our newsletter you will have received one Titled Here's how to beat someone better than you.  This will give you some good tips.

To receive serve well you fist need to understand spin.  Then it is a matter of again finding the best returns against the opponent you are playing.  This can be different for each opponent.  A return that works against one opponent may not work against another.  A basic rule though is that is the serve is short you can push it back short or flick it.  If the serve is long then you should attack it with a topspin.  We have a DVD Receiving Secrets Revealed that will give you a lot of help on this topic.

WIth serving it is a matter of getting a good fast brushing action on the ball to get the ball o start to spin around. Our Serving Secrets Revealed DVD will help you here.  Serving is a complicated but really interesting area.  If you get it right you can win a lot of easy points during a match.

Remember though, training is the key.

thanks coach, i appreciate your answer and indeed, training is the key but for how many hours can one train in a day as to enable him/her develop his/her level fast?

As many as you can.  Ideally at the top level you want to train 2 to 4 hours a day and 5 to 6 days a week.  I know that is impossible for most so we have to compromise and do as much as we can.  If you can train 2 to 3 times a week for 2 hours at a time I think that would be great.

i train 3 hours and trice a week but a friend of mine in china told me that 6 hours a day, (3 hours in the morning & 3 hour in the evining) is how they train in china so i was wondering if mine was ideal. All the same, thanks for your answers & i really do apreciate.

Hi Kinikachi,

If that is how much you can train that it is a very good amount.  You will see improvements with that.  Sometimes if you train for 6 hours a day and you are not concentrating well, then those extra hours can be detrimental rather than beneficial.

It is true that if you train 6 hours a day with really good concentration and focus then it will be better than 3 hours but sometimes that is just not possible.

You need to see what you can do and how well you can focus during that time.
