Hi Michelle,
The main thing is to get a brushing contact on the ball. By this I mean get a fine contact on the ball. It doesn't matter in which direction you contact the ball. Try out all different directions and see what spin you can get.
The best way to start is to be away from the table and see how much curve you can get on the ball.
