I have been having trouble when my opponent chops the ball to me. When they chops the ball I usually lob, But when I lob he does an attacking stroke which stops me from defending it. So how should I counter a backspin chop?

Hi Ganesh,

The best move here iis to do a topspin against the backspin ball.  This is a stroke that can be learned.  It is much more effective than a lob.

To learn how to do this stroke, take a look at the lesson on Forehand Loop off Backspin.

This will show you how to do the stroke effectively.  This is one of the most important strokes in Table Tennis because it allows you to go from defense to attack.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
