How long do table tennis balls last?

I'm wondering how long table tennis balls last. I'm playing with 3-star rejects; those that were intended as 3-stars but couldn't quite make the cut.

Related to that question I have a few others:

* Do better balls last longer?

* Should I clean table tennis balls? Invariably they pick up the table's paint

 Thanks!!

Sincerely,

Michael

Hi Michael,

The three star rejects are still good.  In fact all balls that aren't 3 star are 3 star rejects.  When they manufacture balls they are aiming to make a three star ball.  Some end up lighter and get put into another basket and are sold as lesser balls.

The better balls will last longer because they are a little heavier and have more material in them.  They will also give you a truer bounce.  However, it is a matter of economy.  If you are using a lot of balls for training, you will spend a lot of money.

I don't tend to clean the balls.  I think cleaning tends to make them a bit shiny and slippery if anything.

Tone is in Your Fingers

There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!

Thanks Alois! That's really helpful.

Do the balls wear out? Should I stop using them after any period of time, or should I feel free to use them until they break, or (more typically) I step on them?

You can use them until the break or get stepped on!  They will not alter in performance significantly.
