How should I play against a solid defender

One of my opponent  is a solid defender. He blocks topspins, smashes, whatever you throw at him. And has a very good consistency. I just go on topspining or smashing, which often results in loss. his a good blocker after all.. So i was thinking if I shd play defensive against him bcoz his attacks are not that great and my chops are not easy to attack. Shd i just continue playing offensive or go for defence?

Thnx

Hi Nagaraj,

If you feel like your defence can be successful then that is a good tactic to use.

The blocker relies on your speed to use against you so if you don't give them any speed they need to generate their own.

We have a lesson in our Match Strategy section on Playing A Blocker which will also help.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
