Dear Alois,
I was wondering hwo to get good spin? do you hold it tilted or do you tilt it down? Also I would like to ask how do you get more control over the ball?
Hi Zachary,
The key to getting a lot of spin, is to brush the ball with a fast contact. The angle of the bat and where you brush the ball depends on what type of spin you are trying to generate. For backspin you can come down the back of the ball or underneath the ball. For topspin you can brush up the back of the ball or over the top of the ball.
To get more control over the ball you simply need to practice a lot. For some great ideas to develop ball control watch our video on practicing alone. Another great way to develop control is to practice your serves. Try generating a lot of different types of spin. To develop control in your shots, try using our consistency chart and record how many of a particular stroke you can do in a row with a practice partner. The challenge of trying to beat your best score should help you to focus on improving your consistency and control.
Try out these suggestions and let me know how you go!
If you get pushed back from the table don't just give up the point. Try and and get back into the rally. By lobbing the ball high and deep you give yourself time to get into position. If you can then get some topspin on the ball to force the smasher further away from the table then you are likely to get a weaker smash and then you can take your chance and try to counter attack!
