League Game Nerves

Mental Preparation

Hi Alois

I have started playing in our League games which continue until March 2016. When I am practicing at our club events I play good shots but when I start playing in the League I seem to go to pieces. I find myself hitting really bad shots, and as soon as i have hit the ball, I cringe because I know that is not what I would have normally done. All the people I play are really friendly but competitive and I find myself tightening up as soon as the ball comes towards me. Also I am not really good at reading the spins yet. Will I ever overcome this. I love playing and would be very disappointed in my self if I have to give up playing in the League. Please can you help?

Hi Eileen,

Firstly, yes you will improve your ability to play matches.

Think about your feelings when you play in a match compared to practicing.  Then take a look at this lesson we have in our Sports Psychology on Recognise Your Feelings.  This will be a good first step for you.

Hi Ankan,

That is OK.  Everyone gets nervous.  The more times you are put in that position the better you will get at closing out a match.  Also watch the video listed above.  I think this will help.
